The Grade 4 students moved up and down a line of tables covered with water bottles, juice boxes, apples, packages of carrots and celery, cheese, buns and chocolate – all the ingredients of a nutritious and delicious lunch. Moving with steady efficiency, the Kent Public school students put one of each item into paper bags, which were closed up by other volunteers at Community Living Campbellford-Brighton during the recent Appetite for Awareness day. When they were finished, 320 lunches were ready to be delivered to the people and businesses who purchased them to support the work of the agency during Community Living Month. The lunches are distributed in Campbellford, Warkworth and Brighton. The Appetite For Awareness campaign also promotes awareness of community living, said quality assurances and planning liaison Angela Clarke, noting that this year information about the agency’s Family Home program was included in the lunches. “We’re hoping to have interested community members contact us,” she said. “All proceeds from the lunch go to enhance our outcome sponsorship fund, which offers people supported by the CLCB the opportunity to participate in many things, where money has been a barrier in the past.” Teacher Patrick Muldoon, whose students have participated in Appetite for Awareness for the past four years, helping pack and deliver the lunches to downtown core businesses, said taking part in the campaign helps the students understand what community living does and the role the agency and its volunteers play in the community. “It’s important for kids to do fundraising for people they don’t know,” he said. “It promotes inclusiveness, helps them be part of the community and good citizens for Campbellford.” All the food for Appetite for Awareness is donated by generous local business, many of which also purchase the lunches for $6 each. Supporters include Sharpe’s, Empire Cheese, Fisher’s No Frills, Mike and Lori’s No Frills, Dooher’s Bakery, Dunnett’s Orchard, Campbellford Wholesale and World’s Finest Chocolate.
