Housing, disability supports are key issues for 2005: association board president

Jason-RaeJason Rae, the board president for Community Living Campbellford-Brighton and a self advocate, has identified two issues that he feels should take top priority in the association’s agenda for 2005 – housing and disability supports.

“Right now we’re in a housing crisis,” says Jason.

“A couple of people we support don’t have homes. It’s a big issue here.”

In a previous interview with Leaders, Chris Grayson, Community Living Campbellford-Brighton’s executive director, also identified available housing as a pressing issue in Northumberland County, particularly for aging parents of sons and daughters who have an intellectual disability.

Community Living Campbellford/Brighton has three people in need of homes

Community Living Campbellford/Brighton recently held a news conference, appealing for family home providers for three individuals.

Executive Director Chris Grayson says he needed to draw attention to the fact these three people need a place to live, as their caregivers have given notice after a long-time association with the individuals.

Chris says someone has usually stepped up to the plate in times past, but what is happening is symptomatic of the larger issue of aging parents in the province. “It’s a problem associations are going to see more often,” he says.

“We’ve never had to make this plea before” in the 15 years the association has been involved in the program, he adds.

CLCB appleals to public for help in solving crisis

Wanted: three family homes for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Community Living Campbellford/Brighton is hoping that a direct appeal to the public will work.

“A shortage of family home providers in our service area has created an immediate emergency,” executive director Chris Grayson said.

One of the individuals, an adult male in his late 20s, is currently without a home, and two others, both female also in their 20s, will find themselves in the same situation by the end of the month.
