It takes a team to make these events successful. I would like to thank Ryan Yarrow for taking the lead with the Comedy Show, he was instrumental in its success. Also, it wouldn’t have been possible without the help from Lori Buchan, Jessica Bright, Sarah Greenly, Katrina Joice, Raymond Leeder, Michelle Buchanan and Jane Wellard, the entire Fundraising Committee and our community members who come out each and every time to show their support.

Thanks so much and hope to see everyone on July 28th for our 4th annual Golf Tournament .

 ‘The work never stops,’ says executive director
Friday March 23, 2012 — Kristian PartingtonCAMPBELLFORD, Ont. – At Community Living Campbellford/Brighton, the quest for inclusion is all about strengthening ties within the community and building on its extensive network of supporters and champions.Executive director Nancy Brown and administrative assistant Bev Haley spoke about the importance of this ongoing work during a conversation with Community Living Leaders at their office in Campbellford on March 22.

The organization’s ongoing inclusion awareness campaign, they agree, is most successful when people of all ages are targeted and involved. 

They point to Appetite for Awareness, which takes place in May during Community Living Month, as a prime example of an event that brings people who have an intellectual disability together with Grade 5 students from Kent Public School to spread awareness throughout the community.

The concept involves taking pre-orders of healthy lunches from people and organizations throughout the region from Campbellford to Brighton and everywhere in between. The students from Kent then join with community living team members and volunteers to pack the lunches together and distribute them.

Going into its fourth year, “the event is always a community favourite,” says Haley, and though it involves a bit of effort in terms of co-ordination, she says the impact is well worth it.

Brown says the relationships between support services and young people in the schools is a critical one to nurture because the principles of an inclusive society must be fostered in the minds of people from a young age.

Other community awareness events double as fundraisers, such as the upcoming comedy night scheduled for April 13, or the annual golf tournament held in mid-summer.

Poster campaigns and awareness booths at Royal Bank branches create an ongoing community presence and random acts of kindness — delivering doughnuts out of the blue to community partners, for example — are also part of their ongoing strategy.

“The work never stops,” Brown says with a smile.

CAMPBELLFORD – Close to 500 people accepted Be My Guest’s invitation to be the restaurant’s guest for Thanksgiving dinner Oct. 10, and Community Living Campbellford/Brighton’s Outcomes Sponsorship Fund is $2,850 richer as a result.

 The diners weren’t charged for their turkey dinner but were encouraged to donate to the fund, which provides financial assistance to people with an intellectual disability to help them achieve life goals and dreams.

“If they feel like donating, they donate, if they don’t, they get a free meal,” said Andrew Papaioannou, co-owner of Be My Guest with his father Phil and brother Kosta. “It’s just nice to give away, do something good for the community.”

It’s the fourth year the Doxsee Avenue restaurant has held the charity dinner in support of a local cause.

Community Living’s executive director Nancy Brown and board president Chris Park presented the Papaioannou family and their staff with gifts Oct. 12 as a show of appreciation.

“Quite frankly, without the generosity of people in the community, there are things they (people with an intellectual disability) would just not be able to do,” Mr. Park said, such as have special dental work done or a prosthesis made, “things that are outside the normal funding channels. This donation will really make a difference.”

“It’s a significant amount of money,” Ms. Brown said. “It’s just amazing what they did.”

Ms. Brown said the fund — “we try to keep it over $10,000″ — is supported by grants, award money and fundraisers organized by staff members. The money is used by the people the agency serves to pay for tuition, orthotics, medical supports and reconnections with families. But the fund can also help them realize dreams. One person had the opportunity to go to England this year, Ms. Brown said.

“Everybody has those dreams and aspirations but when you’re on a fixed income, there’s no way you can achieve those,” she said. “We have about 140 people in our service, so each one of those people can apply to the fund, depending on what they want.”

Ms. Brown said applications for assistance are handled by a committee whose members are drawn from staff, the board of directors, the community and persons in service.

“If people can afford to pay it back they do … whatever they can afford,” she said.
