EMC Lifestyles – Campbellford – Moving forward from its 50th anniversary year celebration of events and activities Community Living Campbellford/Brighton has met its challenges head on.

For the first time a new format was put in place and the 51st annual general meeting was combined with a barbeque and family fun at the Seymour Conservation Area.

In a report to members at the meeting the board’s outgoing President Marion Fennell and Executive Director Nancy Brown explained that the organization met some challenges this year with increased costs at a time when the Ministry of Community and Social Services decided not to meet the fourth year base funding commitment.

In addition, the 2010 provincial budget imposed a two-year compensation restraint.

“Community Living was able to meet these difficulties with a small deficit for the 2010/11 budget year,” said their report.

“Recognizing the ongoing contribution, talent and time to the organization,” by the board highlights of the past year were listed as the organization continues to meet its strategic plan direction with ongoing efforts to enhance supports and services.

One of the highlights was a visit by Liberal MP Justin Trudeau who spoke to more than 100 community members about the importance of volunteerism.

As well it was noted that Community Living has developed a strategic approach to building community capacity with a new look at engaging community members in a companion/volunteer model.

This started about a year ago with a small ad hoc committee of community-minded people with a new vision and process for engaging the community.

As a result several new “companions” are now playing a key role in assisting people supported by the organization to enhance their social roles in the community. Continue reading Community Living Meets It’s Challenges

Survey offers hope for job seekers in Trent Hills

TRENT HILLS – A recent survey of two dozen businesses in Trent Hills found 19 per cent of them expect to hire between five and nine people over the next three years, while an equal number is looking at hiring 10 to 14 people.  At least two companies are looking at adding more than 25 people to their payroll during the same period, according to the survey’s results presented at the 2011 Business Appreciation Breakfast Jan. 18.

Vicki Clarke, manager of the Campbellford Community Resource Centre, said the two companies were going outside the country to develop new business.  “One was definitely the health industry,” she said.  “I was astounded by the number of business in this community that are dealing nationally and internationally.  Many of you are stepping outside the community and finding there are opportunities to grow and become a bigger player.”

While some businesses are planning to add new workers to fit their growing, needs, she said others will be hiring to replace retiring workers or accommodate a regular turnover.

Slightly more than half of those surveyed reported an increase in employee numbers over the past three years, while only 10 per cent reduced their workforce, Ms. Clarke said.  “That’s pretty darn health,” she said, but the reality is there are still empty buildings and the resource centre receives 500 visitors each month looking for support as well as help in finding employment.

The resource centre and the municipality’s economic development department initiated the survey to determine the labour needs of area employers and what gaps could be filled locally to provide workers with the proper training.  The survey subsequently became part of a larger effort currently being done by Northumberland County which is to be completed by the end of March.

She said the “hot jobs” for the next three years will be in clerical work (an estimated 20 positions), the health profession (20), sales and service (19), trades helpers and construction workers (15), administrative and business (11) and support for health services (11), such as dental assistant and nurse’s aide.

Ontario Disability Network Executive Director extols virtues of Workers with Disabilities

TRENT HILLS – The country’s growing shortage of workers would be less of a problem if more employers hired members of “Canada’s largest minority” – people with disabilities, says the executive director of the Ontario Disability Network (ODN)

The disable make up 16 per cent of the country’s population, but the unfortunate reality and tragedy is that 70 percent of those people are unemployed, ODN Executive Director Joe Dale told a small gathering of business people at the Campbellford Community Resource Centre on Jan. 18.

They (disabled) represent a huge untapped pool of labour that could help solve what both the Conference Board of Canada and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have said will be the country’s number one economic problem this decade – an estimated one billion people shortfall in workforce participation, Mr. Dale said. 2011 Business Appreciation Breakfast

The 2011 Business Appreciation Breakfast that took place at the Campbellford Community Resource Centre on January 19th, 2011 was a great success.  We are proud to announce there was an excellent turn out from local businesses and service providers to take advantage of the great networking opportunity during the event.  Trends from the Northumberland County Employer Survey Regarding Workforce and Skill Needs in the area were presented.  The audience was pleased to learn that Trent Hills is doing well despite the economic down turn.  The survey demonstrates an employment growth of 52% in the past three years.  We also learned the top industry in Trent Hills is Wholesale Trade and Retail Trade compared to previous studies showing Manufacturing and Production.

We were very privileged to have guest keynote speakers Joe Dale, the Executive Director for the Ontario Disability Employment Network and Mark Wafer, a very progressive Tim Horton’s Franchisee Owner from Scarborough.  Joe and Mark’s extremely motivating presentation included stories of success, myths of hiring people with a disability and the overall impact.  This not only focused on the employee facing a barrier to employment, but the overall positive impact of the business.
